![]() Here’s a good overview of how binaural beats work because it can take some repetition to wrap your mind around how the process works: The brain way perceives the binaural beat and resonates to the frequency of the difference in the two tones, which is popularly known as brainwave entrainment, and in the scientific literature, it is called the frequency following response. What happens is your brain interprets the two tones as a beat of their own and aligns your brain waves to produce a beat with a frequency that is the difference in hertz (HZ) of the two tones.įor example, if you are listening to a 430 Hz tone with your left ear and a 440 Hz tone with your right ear, you would be hearing a 10 Hz tone which will entrain your brain waves to the alpha frequency in the range of 8 – 12 Hz. There is also a lot of anecdotal evidence from the millions of people that regularly listen to binaural beats on YouTube to achieve states of deep tranquility, flashes of creative insight, euphoria, intensely focused attention, and enhanced learning abilities.Ī binaural beat is technically an illusion created by the brain when you listen to two tones with slightly different frequencies in each ear simultaneously. While much of the scientific establishment is skeptical of their benefits, these frequencies have been studied extensively by Robert Monroe and The Monroe Institute over the past 40 years.įrom their extensive research, they argue that inducing brainwave frequencies through the use of binaural beats causes a wide range of effects and could be a revolutionary technology for improving mental health (I will outline the scientific research into the efficacy of binaural beats later in this guide). I’ve also found that they are an effective tool for both active recovery and achieving deep states of relaxation in addition to the benefits of increasing the length of my attention span when doing challenging work online. I’ve been listening to binaural beats to study and relax ever since I discovered Holosync while I was at University and I have found them to be very effective for improving my focus and productivity. ![]() They work through signals of two different frequencies that are played separately in each ear, which causes the human brain to detect the phase variation between the frequencies and try to reconcile that difference by creating a third signal - called a binaural beat - which is equal to the difference between those two frequencies. They are used to stimulate and influence your brain’s electrical brain wave activity and guide you to specific mental states that correspond to the frequencies of brainwave entrainment used. Binaural beats are a method of producing brainwave entrainment.

If you want to support me, making it more financially viable and easier to explain to people at parties, please back my patreon. Queen: An Exploded Diagram is me having big and little thoughts about every Queen song in chronological order. Also, if you watch the whole Jim Henson tribute and don’t cry a little, I don’t want to know you. *Actually also originally from the Snoopy Musical. And by training us to constantly shift up and down in beat and rhythm and mood and mode, the song even sits well in the record.Īnd you’re going to have it jammed in your head for months. Play for the audience, revel in the theatre. Tonally, it’s different to the rest of the album, but it’s still just an extension of the logic of Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy. 'This Magic Moment' written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman wa. (Could that be a motto for this project?)Ĭommit to the notion of a tribute to one guy, by singing about bringing back another, and doing it in the style of something even further else, and it all works. The Drifters were one of the best & most successful vocal groups of the late 1950s & early 1960s. It’s got a lot of highlights, basically, as long as you’re willing to give yourself over to the logic of it. It’s that or the old timey electioneering of ‘we want Leroy for president’. Everything slows, and the harmonies soften, only for the whole thing to storm back into near full charleston. My favourite moment is actually the breakdown. Everything is artificially aged except the energy, which actually feels parallel to barn stormer Stone Cold Crazy. Barbershop harmonies bounce off dixieland ukulele-banjo, double bass fills and jangle piano (which is a piano with drawing pins or equivalent in the hammers). I feel like only Freddie would toast a recently deceased hero with such a ludicrous vaudeville melodrama.Īpparently, Tin Pan Alley, is what it’s supposed to be calling back to. I tend to dabble with labelling, but only when I feel like the genre name is onomatopaeic enough (or the nearest equivaent) to make sense whether you know the strict meaning or not.Īnyway, it turns out that this isn’t a tribute to the music hall, it’s a tribute to Jim Croce. I’m a pretty unreliable narrator at the best of times, but particularly when it comes to genre definition. Which is basically to say, that my childhood was a mush of schmaltz and smeared semiotics that I still can’t really make any sense of. Songs from Snoopy, the Muppets*, Cole Porter and indeed, Jim Croce merged with what I saw as one particular part of musical theatre history. But this is how I first came into contact with a lot of what I think of as music hall type performances.Īctually, it’s a hodge podge of references. I still don’t know whether to be embarrassed by this part of my history (well, apart from the brief part as Commissioner Gordon, which I have repressed utterly). When Scouts and Guides got together and sang songs in a variety style. My first contact with bad bad was in Gang Show, see. ![]() Good luck finding the nog in August though. So, there I was, assuming this was a tribute to music hall vaudeville, and it actually turns out that that isn’t the origin of Bad, bad, Leroy Brown, and actually this is Freddie’s elegy to some guy I’d never heard of. ![]() And as a gift for you, we’ve assembled 65 Christmas songs so incredibly catchy, you just might want to listen all year round. But festive cheer has found its way into pop, hip-hop, R&B, metal, punk, indie… you name it. ![]() There is, of course, something of a Christmas canon: ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and ‘Fairytale of New York’ are great songs… which is good, as inevitably you’re going to hear them about a million times this holidays. But even more cynical later generations of pop have produced plenty of gold. There are plenty of keepers from the ‘40s-‘70s heyday of the Christmas record as an art form. Love them, hate them, or just accept them as a sort of immutable fact of life, Christmas songs are a thing, and as December 25 gets inexorably closer and closer they’re a thing that becomes increasingly inescapable.Īnd although there’s been a fair amount of disposable novelty rubbish written over the years, the reality is that a lot of Christmas songs are bangers. ![]() Why is each returned row an array, rather than a string? Because if we use groups to capture parts of the text, the array will contain the groups: CREATE TABLE Stuff (id SERIAL, thing TEXT) ![]() This indicates that there were three matches. Notice how regexp_matches, because of the g option, returned three rows, with each row containing a single (one-character) array. SELECT id, thing FROM Stuff WHERE thing ~* '^ This operator, as mentioned above, is often used to include or exclude rows in a query’s WHERE clause: CREATE TABLE Stuff (id SERIAL, thing TEXT) ![]() Select 'abcq' ~* '^]+$' - returns "false" In addition to the standard character classes, we can also use POSIX-style character classes: select 'abc' ~* '^]$' - returns "false" Thus, you can say: select 'abc' ~ 'a.c' - returns "true" All of these operators return true or false: In each case, the text string to be matched should be on the left, and the regexp should be on the right. PostgreSQL comes with four regexp operators. By contrast, the regexp functions are meant to retrieve some or all of a string from a column’s text value. PostgreSQL’s operators are generally aimed at finding whether a particular regexp matches text, in order to include or exclude result rows from an SQL query. Where things are truly different in PostgreSQL’s implementation is the set of operators and functions used to work with regexps. (This was likely done to avoid conflicts with the ASCII backspace character.) However, there are differences between the regexp syntax -for example, PostgreSQL’s word-boundary metacharacter is \y whereas in Python and Ruby, it is \b. Thus, + is a metacharacter in PostgreSQL, whereas \+ is a plain “plus” character. PostgreSQL’s regexp syntax is similar to that of Python and Ruby, in that you use backslashes to neutralize metacharacters. If there is a match, PostgreSQL returns “true.” Thus, you will create a string (using single quotes only you should never use double quotes in PostgreSQL), and then match that to another string. Regexps in PostgreSQL are defined using strings. ![]() Regexps in PostgreSQL are a hidden gem, one which many people don’t even know exists, but which can be extremely useful. It can be used to test which rows match certain criteria, but it can also be used to retrieve selected text from columns inside of a table. That said, PostgreSQL includes a powerful regexp engine. PostgreSQL isn’t a language per se, but rather a relational database system. I’ve used these many times over the years, and it’s quite possible that you’ll also find them to be of assistance when writing queries. I’m thus presenting an excerpt from the book, providing an overview of PostgreSQL’s regexp operators and functions. And even more are surprised by the variety of ways in which they can use regexps from within PostgreSQL. Others, once they take a look, are surprised by how powerful the engine is. When I tell people this, they often say, “PostgreSQL? Really?!?” Many are surprised to hear that PostgreSQL supports regexps at all. The book (similar to my earlier ebook, “ Practice Makes Python“) contains 50 exercises to improve your fluency with regular expressions (“regexps”), with solutions in Python, Ruby, JavaScript, and PostgreSQL. Introduction to machine learning in PythonĪfter months of writing, editing, and procrastinating, my new ebook, “Prac tice Makes Regexp” is almost ready.Introduction to Python (for experienced coders). Judy, the owner, and her son, David are usually around. I wouldn’t make a trip up to Seattle just for a stop at the Snappy Dragon, but I do try to work it in to a visit at least once a year. I’m also a fan of their Green Onion Pancakes and their BBQ pork. Fresh noodles are the bomb, and they do them wonderfully. As I mentioned, the fresh noodle chow mein is well known, and a great dish. Another dish I adore from there is the “Dry Sauteed String Beans” (I can make that dish too). ![]() After some puttering, I finally nailed it, and I make them a few times a year (and always on New Year’s Eve, where you sit with friends and drink and talk and make them in the last few hours of the old year and then eat them in the first hours of the New Year – a lovely tradition I’ve flatly stolen from the Chinese). So, I logged a few meals at the dumpling bar watching their technique, and then hit the library (for you young’uns, that is how you googled before the world wide web) to find some recipes. And that was a good thing, because when I stumble on something I love in a restaurant, I kind of obsess over it until I can figure out how to make it myself. They even have a Jiao-zi bar in the corner of the restaurant where you can sit and watch them make them. They are probably most famous for their Jiao-zi (boiled dumplings) and their Chow Mein with soft, house-made noodles, rolled and cut to order. First off, they use lots of fresh, local ingredients. When I heard of the Edge’s 3.5-liter Duratec V-6, I fretted that it was a bored-out version of the played-out Duratec 3.0-liter that just barely meets the challenge in several Ford models. The SEL and SEL Plus add chrome tailpipes. The spoiler on the higher trims is body-colored. Ford hasn’t gone the way of some competitors by eradicating black door handles and side mirrors they appear on the SE, along with a black rear spoiler. There are three Edge trim levels: SE, SEL and SEL Plus. The taillight treatment doesn’t bother me as much, but the rear looks a little like a minivan’s. The Fusion’s styling has grown on me (except for the shiny taillights), and to me the Edge is better still. If they didn’t look like SUVs, they looked like station wagons, and wagon is a dirty word - almost as dirty as “minivan.” The Chrysler Pacifica and Ford Freestyle, the latter a brilliantly packaged and underappreciated people-mover, have floundered, in part, because they look like giant station wagons. Does this mean people are getting more comfortable with models that have SUV characteristics but don’t look quite like trucks? Many car-based SUVs have been made to look like the familiar truck-based variety, tricking image-conscious shoppers into trying them and discovering all their inherent benefits. This associates the Edge more with Ford’s cars than its trucks and SUVs. The Edge follows the styling direction established by the Fusion, Ford’s midsize sedan. On its own merits, though, it’s definitely worthy of consideration for shoppers seeking a midsize SUV. Even though it’s a crossover, its gas mileage isn’t what it could be, and it lacks the third row of seats that seems so important to buyers nowadays. The Edge is a comfortable, quick, smooth-riding light SUV with five seats and fresh styling. To see what details are different this year, check out a side-by-side comparison of the two model years. Little of substance has changed with this year’s model. Editor’s note: This review was written in December 2006 about the SEL Plus AWD version of the 2007 Ford Edge. ![]() If a bloody show occurs too early during a pregnancy, there are a few options to counteract the increased risk of infection and premature labor.
